Print Solutions

Our standard screen printing is carried out using eco-friendly plastisol inks designed to resist cracking, fading, and wear after multiple washes. We have the capability to screen print up to six colors on white, light, and dark-colored garments. We also offer several ink additives that allow us to achieve a variety of textures and specialty effects.

service

Depending on the type of garment or artwork you would like screen printed, we can offer different screen sizes to fit your production needs. Below, you will see two garment categories outlined with the maximum suggested print size for each. Anything within those parameters is considered that particular print size. For example, if you choose to screen print an oversized image, you can use the full print area within the parameters of 20"W x 20"H.

size

Remember that each production run consists of one print size. The printed image size will not vary based on the garment size. Please choose the best artwork size to fit across all garment sizes. We are happy to create multiple artwork sizes, but each size requires a separate screen and will be priced accordingly. For example, a 15" wide art file may fit well on the front of an XL or XXL T-shirt, but it may appear too large on a Small or Medium T-shirt.

halftone screen printing
Halftone screen printing is a printing technique that uses dots to create the appearance of shading, dimension, or photographic detail while requiring only a single ink color. This method is achieved by applying a halftone pattern to the artwork, where the specific placement and density of the dots create the illusion of tonal variation when viewed from a distance. Halftone screen printing works best when there is strong contrast between the print color and the garment color. For example, a white T-shirt will generally yield the best results when paired with black plastisol ink.

Halftone Printed Image
Halftone screen printing is not only a technical process but also an art form. An experienced designer must determine where to increase or decrease the spread and density of halftone dots to achieve a seamless, balanced finish.
Because the halftone screen printing technique uses one ink color to create the effect of shading and tonal variation, it can be a cost-effective solution compared to printing multiple colors to account for different shades and tones within the artwork. At JB Screen Printing & Embroidery, experience is an understatement. Our graphic designers possess a deep-rooted passion for the craft, along with a strong understanding of how halftone dots, ink, and artwork preparation work together to produce a clean finished print.
The first stage of halftone screen printing begins with the artist creating a high-resolution design that allows for optimal clarity and print quality. If the artwork is low resolution, the halftone dot pattern may not reproduce clearly when printed or viewed from a distance. If you need help determining whether your artwork is suitable for halftone screen printing, email us with your design specifications and a team member will follow up with art direction. size

Water-based VS. Plastisol Screen Printing

a tale of two techniques...

Plastisol ink has evolved significantly throughout the history of screen printing, with many modern formulations moving away from certain restricted additives, such as phthalates. Water-based inks are generally considered more eco-conscious because they are PVC-free and use water as the primary solvent base. In our line of work, water-based ink is one of the cleaner print options available when a softer hand feel and reduced environmental impact are priorities.

In screen printing, the term “soft hand” refers to the feel of the printed garment. With water-based screen printing, the ink penetrates the fabric fibers rather than sitting heavily on top of the garment, resulting in a softer, smoother print with a more natural feel. Water-based prints are often less opaque than traditional plastisol prints, especially on darker garments, but they can provide a lightweight finish that feels nearly integrated into the fabric. By contrast, plastisol screen printing typically produces a more visible, slightly raised print surface that remains noticeable even after washing. Some clients prefer plastisol for that reason, so the best ink choice depends on the look, feel, opacity, and finish required for the project.
Durability and longevity are important considerations in water-based screen printing. Because water-based inks penetrate the fabric fibers rather than sitting heavily on top of the garment, the print becomes integrated with the material and produces a softer, more natural feel. Plastisol ink is also durable and long-lasting, but it typically creates a more textured, slightly raised print surface that can be felt on the garment. Depending on the artwork, garment color, and fabric blend, dark garments may require a discharge printing method. Discharge printing removes the original dye from the print area before the ink is applied, allowing the design to appear more clearly on darker fabrics. If the goal is to achieve a worn, vintage, or tonal effect, the discharge layer may be omitted, resulting in a softer and more faded appearance. For white or light-colored garments, a discharge layer is generally not required. Please keep in mind that exact Pantone® color matching can be more difficult on dark garments and 50/50 fabric blends, especially when using water-based or discharge printing methods. For the most consistent results, we recommend 100% cotton garments in white or light colors whenever possible. For help preparing your artwork or selecting the proper fabric blend for your desired result, please contact us for project-specific guidance.
